Traveling to Gibraltar in 2024: Your Ultimate Guide to Things to See, Eat and Do

Where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meets.

Gibraltar, a unique British Overseas Territory nestled at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, is a fascinating destination that blends British and Mediterranean cultures. As someone who first visited Gibraltar in 2022 and has since spent several months as a resident, I'm excited to share my insights to help you plan your upcoming trip to this captivating corner of Europe.

How Long to Stay in Gibraltar

While many visitors opt for a day trip while visiting Costa del Sol. I recommend staying for 1-2 nights to fully experience Gibraltar's charm. This allows you to explore at a more relaxed pace and enjoy the vibrant nightlife and dining scene. However, you’ll be able to see the main attractions in just a day trip.

When to visit

I’d say the main tourist season starts in June and lasts up until early September. I’d recommend avoiding this period and come in May/September - it’s not too hot and you’ll be most likely enjoy the beach as well. If you don’t plan to sunbathe, I’d also recommend April and and October for sure.

Where to Stay in Gibraltar

Gibraltar offers a range of accommodation options to suit various preferences and budgets. Here are some top recommendations:

  1. Sunborn Gibraltar: A luxurious yacht hotel offering a unique stay experience.

  2. The Rock Hotel: A historic hotel with stunning views of the Bay of Gibraltar.

  3. The Elliott Hotel: A comfortable option in the heart of Gibraltar.

Plenty of AirBnBs, managed apartments etc., search for Facebook group 'Gibraltar’ to find some more local recommendations.

What to See in Gibraltar - A Single Trip Itinerary

  1. Trip to the Top of the Rock: Start your day with a visit to the iconic Rock of Gibraltar. The views from the top are truly magnificent, offering panoramic vistas of the Mediterranean, Spain, and on clear days, the coast of Africa. During June-August, the weather would be most likely clear but if you’re coming off season, make sure to check the forecast or plan your trip to the top in late afternoon when levanter usually clears up. Cloudy Top of the Rock might prevent you from the experience. Don’t feed the monkeys!

  2. Gibraltar Nature Reserve: Take a tour of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, home to Gibraltar's famous Barbary macaques. You can find tour drivers waiting at Casemates Square to take you up. Alternatively, you can use the Gibraltar Cable Car, but be prepared for potential long waiting times during peak season.

  3. Explore Main Street: After your Rock tour, head to Main Street for some tax-free shopping and to soak in the British atmosphere with a Mediterranean twist. I recommend checking the jewelry stores if you’re in the market for some gold treat. :)

  4. Lunch at Casemates Square: Enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants in Casemates Square, the perfect spot to refuel and people-watch.

Weather Tip

Be aware of the "Levanter" - eastern winds that can bring an overcast, potentially hindering your views from above. Gibraltar has its own microclimate, so it's essential to check the weather forecast. If it's cloudy in the morning, consider exploring the town first, as the sky often clears around 3 pm.

Extra Things to See and Do in Gibraltar

If you have more time or are staying overnight, consider these additional activities:

  1. Europa Point: Visit Europa Point for views of Africa, the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, and the Trinity Lighthouse.

  2. Beach Time: Enjoy the Mediterranean climate at Eastern Beach or Camp Bay if the weather's nice. Local buses can take you to these spots.

  3. Dinner at Queensway Quay Marina: Enjoy weekly specials at Monique’s Bistro. Make a reservation if your schedule’s tight.

  4. Healthy Alternative: For fitness/healthy eating enthusiasts, check out Hustle and Flow eatery. You might know their branch from Marbella.
